Sigmund Freud Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious

"Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious" is Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic examination of what makes something funny. From the father of psychoanalysis we get an interesting argument that at the heart of humor is the need to satisfy ones unconscious desires. Freud explains through numerous examples how jokes allow us a release from our inhibitions and provide significant satisfaction of the desire for pleasure. Building upon his earlier work, «The Interpretation of Dreams», Freud draws parallels to dreaming, neuroses, and psychopathology. A captivating work of psychoanalysis, «Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious» gives great insight into Freud's theories and the nature of humor in the human mind.

H. W. Chase The Unconscious

The Interpretation of Dreams is a book in which Freud introduces his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, and also first discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex, and it is widely considered one of his most important works. Dreams, in Freud's view, are all forms of wish fulfillment"– attempts by the unconscious to resolve a conflict of some sort, whether something recent or something from the recesses of the past.
Psychopathology of Everyday Life is a work based on Freud's researches into slips and parapraxes from 1897 onwards, one which became perhaps the best-known of all his writings. Sometimes called the Mistake Book, the work became one of the scientific classics of the 20th century. Through its stress on what Freud called «switch words» and «verbal bridges», it is considered important for psychopathology.
Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious is a book on the psychoanalysis of jokes and humor. In this work, Freud described the psychological processes and techniques of jokes, which he likened as similar to the processes and techniques of dream-work and the Unconscious. Freud claims that our enjoyment of the joke indicates what is being repressed in more serious talk.
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the father of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. Sigmund Freud A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis & Dream Psychology (Psychoanalysis for Beginners)

Introduction to Psychoanalysis is a set of lectures given by Sigmund Freud 1915-17, which became the most popular and widely translated of his works. The 28 lectures offered an elementary stock-taking of his views of the unconscious, dreams, and the theory of neuroses at the time of writing, as well as offering some new technical material to the more advanced reader. In these three-part Introductory Lectures, by beginning with a discussion of Freudian slips in the first part, moving on to dreams in the second, and only tackling the neuroses in the third, Freud succeeded in presenting his ideas as firmly grounded in the common-sense world of everyday experience.
Freud built his complete method of psycho-analysis around his dream theories. In the book Dream Psychology: Psychoanalysis for Beginners Freud explains the buried meanings inside dreams, particularly the drive and the connection between the unconscious and conscious, blocked sexual cravings, and the significance of dreams to our overall well-being.

In creating psychoanalysis, Freud developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association and discovered transference, establishing its central role in the analytic process. Freud's redefinition of sexuality to include its infantile forms led him to formulate the Oedipus complex as the central tenet of psychoanalytical theory. His analysis of dreams as wish-fulfillments provided him with models for the clinical analysis of symptom formation and the mechanisms of repression as well as for elaboration of his theory of the unconscious.

Sigmund Freud Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex

A pivotal work in the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud, «Three Contributions to the Theory of Sex» puts forth many of the foundational ideas that make up Freud's theories on sexuality. Freud argues that sexual perversion exists even among the healthy and finds its root in childhood not adolescence. Freud builds upon his «The Interpretation of Dreams» by arguing that the unconscious mind plays a significant role in sexual development and that sexuality is a driving force in the development of psychological neuroses.

Sigmund Freud Beyond the Pleasure Principle

This short work by world-renowned psychologist Sigmund Freud marks a major turning point in the author's theoretical approach. Prior to this work Freud's examination of the forces that drive man focused primarily on the Eros of man, the life instinct innate in all humans. In «Beyond the Pleasure Principle» Freud moves beyond these creative and pleasure-seeking impulses to discuss the impact on human psychology of the Thanatos, or death instinct, which Freud describes as «an urge inherent in all organic life to restore an earlier state of things».

Sigmund Freud Psychopathology of Everyday Life

According to Freud, our daily lives teem with unwitting expressions of the wishes and ideas we try to keep hidden. These suppressed notions elude our conscious control and take the form of slips of the tongue, jokes, and seemingly accidental gestures. In this classic of psychology, Freud explores the phenomenon of parapraxes: slips of the tongue commonly known as Freudian slips, acts of forgetfulness, misinterpretations, and «accidents.» These simple and apparently trivial events, he explains, can possess deeper meanings with subconscious motivations — meanings that can be revealed by analysis and can ultimately offer a clearer perception of the self.Psychopathology of Everyday Life remains one of Freud’s most widely read books, full of anecdotal accounts (many of them quite amusing) and free from jargon and technical terminology. Freud draws from his personal experience to illustrate his points, citing many incidents of his own deliberate forgetting or «inexplicable» mistakes, and his conviction that these actions cannot be called truly accidental or uncaused is the primary lesson of this book. As the title suggests, this work has helped unravel the mysteries of the ordinary events of our daily lives, offering us a deeper understanding of ourselves and our motivations.

Sigmund Freud Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis

There exists, of course, few more famous figures in the field of psychology than Sigmund Freud. As the founding father of psychoanalysis, or the clinical method for treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst, his impact on the field of psychology cannot be understated. Based on a series of lectures given at the University of Vienna in 1915, «Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis» builds upon Freud's earlier work «Five Lectures on Psycho-Analysis» to provide a comprehensive overview of the pioneer's work in the field of psychoanalysis. G. Stanley Hall describes in his preface that «these twenty-eight lectures to laymen are elementary and almost conversational. Freud sets forth with a frankness almost startling the difficulties and limitations of psychoanalysis, and also describes its main methods and results as only a master and originator of a new school of thought can do. These discourses are at the same time simple and almost confidential, and they trace and sum up the results of thirty years of devoted and painstaking research.» A must read for those interested in the field of psychology and Freud's contribution to it.

Vienna, 1920: Professor Sigmund Freud is known for his interest in the human psyche, but Psychoanalysis is still an emerging field with its share of critics. When Constable Karl Gruber seeks out Sigmund Freud's help in dealing with a gruesome murder case, the professor sees a new opportunity to explore the many facets of human behavior and thinking. Together with his stubborn daughter Anna, Sigmund Freud sets out to help Constable Gruber and solve the unusual and mysterious cases of Vienna. This collection contains episodes 1 – 4 of «The Sigmund Freud Files». Episode 1 – The Second Face A mysterious homicide case leads Constable Karl Gruber to seek out psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud for the first time. The daughter of the Wiener Burgtheater's director has been murdered under gruesome circumstances: the corpse has been drained of all its blood. Detective Gruber suspects that a vampire is on the loose in Vienna. Sigmund Freud feels compelled to put an end to the superstition and begins to track down the real killer. Episode 2 – Father and Son A new patient appears on Sigmund Freud's roster. The initial session soon takes a dramatic turn when the man pulls a gun on Freud. The day before, he murdered his own father, and now he demands absolution from the Professor. While Anna contacts Karl and they both hold an emergency session right outside the therapy room in an effort to put an end to the hostage situation, Sigmund tries to use all means at his disposal to persuade the man to surrender before a disaster occurs. Episode 3 – Injury Shots echo through Vienna's streets at dawn. A sniper has holed up in a church tower and threatens to shoot anyone who dares to show themselves on the square below. Constable Karl Gruber can persuade Freud to help him find a diplomatic solution to the situation. Under time pressure and against strong resistance from Karl's police colleagues, Freud negotiates with the man who – just like Karl – fought at the front lines in World War I. Sigmund Freud has to do everything he can to stop the shooter from carrying out further bloodshed. Episode 4 – Stimulus Sigmund Freud is suspected of having raped one of his patients. The young woman is in a vegetative state and unable to communicate. The Public Prosecutor investigates Freud, and there is no shortage of witnesses willing to testify against the Professor. Anna starts to suspect that her father is the victim of a conspiracy. While Sigmund tries to defend against the allegations against him, Anna and Karl have to try and solve the case.
